Questions we're often asked
Can't see your question? Use the free survey form or message us on WhatsApp.
How much does CCTV cost?
Every job is priced after a free survey, with a fixed, itemised quote – nothing is added unless you ask for it. As a guide, upgrading an old 4-camera analogue system starts from £749 using your existing cables, and a new 4-camera IP system starts from £1,675 fitted. The price depends on the number of cameras, cable runs, working height and how much recording you need. We're not VAT registered, so there's no VAT on top.
How long does an installation take?
Most 4-camera homes are fitted in a day, including setting up the app on your phones. Larger systems or business sites can take two or three days – we'll tell you how long when we quote.
Will the cameras work at night?
Yes. We fit Hikvision ColorVu cameras as standard, which record in full colour at night using a small built-in light, rather than the grainy black-and-white of older cameras.
Can I watch my cameras on my phone?
Yes. We set up the Hik-Connect app on your phones before we leave, with live view, playback and alerts when a person or vehicle is detected. Watching away from home needs an internet connection at the property – the recorder keeps recording either way.
How much footage is recorded, and for how long?
The recorder saves footage to a hard drive at your property, usually 30 days or more depending on the number of cameras and the drive size. Older footage is overwritten automatically, and we can show you how to save and share a clip.
Does my CCTV need to follow data protection law?
If your cameras only cover your own property, home CCTV isn't covered by data protection law. If they capture any area beyond your boundary – a pavement, road or a neighbour's garden – the law applies to you, so you'd need a clear reason, signs, and to handle requests for footage properly. We plan camera positions with you to keep views on your own property wherever possible. See the ICO's guidance on domestic CCTV.
Do I need planning permission?
Usually not for cameras on a house. If your home is a listed building or in a conservation area, check with your local council first.
What happens in a power cut?
The recorder and cameras stop until the power comes back, then restart on their own. If you want them to keep running, we can add a small backup battery (UPS) to the recorder.
Can you fix or upgrade a system someone else installed?
Yes. We repair and upgrade systems we didn't fit – replacing failed hard drives and recorders, adding cameras, or swapping old analogue cameras for HD on the existing cables. Book a free CCTV check and we'll tell you what's worth keeping.
What warranty do I get?
1 year on all equipment, 3 years on recorder hard drives and 12 months on our workmanship, from the day we hand over your system.
Who will do the work?
Theo, who runs Phoenix Smart Homes, does the survey and the installation himself – so you deal with the person doing the work from start to finish. He holds a CSCS/ECS card and carries out a risk assessment for every job.
Is your CCTV stuck in the past?
Grainy pictures, black and white at night, no app on your phone? Upgrade to full-colour HD – often using the cables you already have.
